Since it’s fast approaching EDINBURGH FRINGE time again, I thought I’d take the opportunity to promote 3 of my favourite comedians again. Yes, they’re all women. Yes, they’re all extremely funny. And, yes, I do think more could be done to promote female comedians.
So, going back in time, to the STAND OUT COMEDY TOUR, I’d found myself with the opportunity to take in an extra bit of the Tour, and I was so very glad that I did. The strength of these performers meant that no gig was quite the same; the material varied, the audience reaction altered, and the lighting was different… immensely different. From the dark, muted blue and red tones of SOUND CONTROL, Manchester, I found myself with the warm, peachy glow of the GLEE CLUB, Nottingham. This venue was much more appropriate for this type of gig as not only did they provide much more flattering lighting, the crowd were much closer and, with no barriers to peer over, very much more involved in the performances.
JEN BRISTER played host tonight, in addition to her own set, with SUZI RUFFELL and ZOE LYONS taking the stage in between. The comedy was again rounded off by a sterling musical performance from AMiTY.
All four of these ladies provided me with so many photo opportunties that I was spoilt for choice, but couldn’t resist the ‘shoe shots’. I’m always intrigued by the variety of footwear worn on stage (Well, when you’re in the Press Pit, that’s pretty much the first thing you see!) I always think that the choice footwear tells a little story about the performer. Maybe I’m just weird.
Anyway, they’re all marvellous. Go and see them, if you can. And to the person whose ear I guffawed in rather too loudly at Zoe’s overtly enthusiastic ‘Dog Pram’ joke, I’m sorry!

The Japanese are very fond of their comedians, and the most famous in modern times are called owarai (literally “honorable laughs”), which is a pair, usually of men, one of whom is the tsukkomi (i.e. the “straight” one) and the other the boke (bokeh) (i.e. the “fool”). Owarai began with the birth of television in Japan, but this typical pairing is based on the much older comic art form of manzai, based in the Kansai region (i.e., in the west of Honshu, primarily Osaka).
Owarai is typically very fast-paced and based on a number of devices. These include dajare, or punning, which Japanese, being full of synonyms, readily lends itself to. Or konto (from the French conte) which is a short story-type encounter acted out by a pair of comedians. Dokkiri is a practical hidden camera joke such as falling over an unexpected obstacle or being hit by a falling object. A shimoneta is a dirty, lewd joke. A gyagu (i.e. gag) is simply a “corny joke.” There is also the device of kire (kee-reh), literally meaning “snapping,” i.e. “losing it,” expressed by suddenly hollering at the other person.
Perhaps the three most popular owarai in Japan are Beat Takeshi, Sanma, and Tamori.
Beat Takeshi, real name Takeshi Kitano, was born in Tokyo in 1947, and has been a big name not only in Japanese comedy since the 1970s, but in Japanese cinema, too, since the 1980s. He is also a prolific author. These days his serious side seems to have almost eclipsed his funny side.
Akashiya Sanma – usually just Sanma (literally “Pacific saury”) was born Takafumi Sugimoto in Wakayama prefecture in 1955. Sanma, famous for his large protruding teeth, is the ultimate motor-mouth comedian, always revving at full speed, laughing uproariously, and an excellent mimic.
Tamori, born Kazuyoshi Morita in Fukuoka (on the southern island of Kyushu) in 1945 is best known as the host of the legendary TV program Waratte Ii Tomo (It’s OK to Laugh) which has aired every day since 1982 from the famous Studio Alta in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Since the late 1970s Tamori has been known for his trademark dark glasses that Tamori is almost never seen without.

 I’ve talked a couple of times about my cousin. His name is John Hastings and he’s one of the funniest people that I’ve ever met. And I’m not just saying that cause he’s a ginger. Nope, he’s really funny, like gets paid to be funny. Yes, it’s true, he was a comedian long before my 90 year old granny decided to give it a try.
I’ve seen him a couple of times live and now you will get to see him too, from the comfort of your living room.
I’m so excited to announce that John will have his own comedy special on The Comedy Network tonight! Comedy Now airs at 10:00pm and I seriously cannot wait.
I’ve always said that, to me, comedy is the hardest type of entertainment out there and not only is John making a living at it, he’s doing amazing.
